Today we’re sharing a fun and easy sewing craft for kids, shape monsters with a free printable pattern.

You can sew Sammy Square, Tammy Triangle or Cecilia Circle, but watch out – these guys will gobble up anything they find of their own shape!

Our shape monsters are part of the sew a softie tutorial hop, organised by Trixi from Sew A Softie blog.

I love participating in the sew a softie blog hops! In the past we’ve made dinosaurs, ghosts, jellyfish, bookmarks and also a ‘happy pear’ Christmas ornament

This time around I was initially going to share some mini rainbow bears, but got frustrated with how long it was taking to blanket-stitch them together – and I’d planned to make SEVEN little bears (one in each colour of the rainbow).

I haven’t totally binned the idea, they were very cute and I may still make the Rainbow bears at some point down the track. However, I figure that if I’m getting frustrated about how long they take to sew together myself a kid will too. So, I came up with something super quick and easy, inspired by Trixi’s simple kids’ sewing patterns from her blog and book.

These shape monsters use only basic stitching so they’re great for beginners and younger kids. They can be a little fiddly to cut out from felt, and some kids will need help with that. Also, the facial features are sewn on because I find that glued on features don’t always stay put. To make the project simpler for beginners you could glue the facial features on with fabric glue.

How to make a shape monster softie

You will need

  • soft felt in assorted colours
  • embroidery thread
  • sewing needle
  • Sharp scissors
  • Your choice of shape monster

How to

Cut out the felt pieces. Pin the shapes to soft felt and cut around them. FOr some of the smaller pieces it’s easier to hold the paper shape over the felt whilst cutting, or you could use a small piece of double sided tape to keep it in place if that’s too tricky.

Sew the arms onto the back piece of felt, and the facial pieces to the front piece. Alternatively keep the facial features aside and glue them on at the end.

steps to making a softie triangle monster

Place the two pieces together with the arms and legs on the inside, and sew most of the way around the body using running stitch. When there’s a small gap left, fill with stuffing, then complete the stitching.
